Series History

  • This is the first ever meeting between Bryant and UMBC.

Bulldogs Notes and Notables

  • Bryant is looking for its first opening day win since 2013, a 3-0 victory over Lehigh.
  • The Bulldogs are looking for their first win against an America East opponent since 2014 when they beat New Hampshire 2-0. They've lost five in a row against teams from the conference since then.
  • Sophomore Nathaniel Brown (Queens, N.Y.) is the lone returning player who was in the top five of scoring last season for Bryant. He totaled three goals and one assist in the 2016 campaign.
  • Senior Nick Stewart (South Windsor, Conn.) is back to lead the Bulldogs in net. He finished with a .724 save percentage last season, allowing 1.87 goals per game in 2016.
  • The freshman class (9) outnumbers all of the other classes for head coach Seamus Purcell's club. It will play a big role in the team's success this season as a few will be key players, including forward Jared Lee (South Setauket, N.Y.) and midfielder Charles DeSantis (Saint-Mathias-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec).

A bit about the Retrievers

  • It was a down year by many standards for head coach Pete Caringi and his staff, who went to the 2014 College Cup. They recorded five wins in 17 matches last season and did not qualify for the America East Tournament for the first time since 2008.
  • The Retrievers were led last season by freshman Tre Pulliam, who totaled nine points on four goals and one assist.
  • Senior Sammy Kahsai, who finished second on the team with six points in 2016, is also back for this year.
  • In net, Billy Heavner's role will have to be replaced by one of a trio of goalies ready for the season in Tomas Potts, Hunter Trefny and Ciaran O'Loughlin.
