Bulldogs topple Harvard, BU, MIT Saturday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team put together one of its best performances at the Division I level on Saturday, defeating Harvard, Boston University and MIT at the MIT Invitational in Cambridge, Mass.

Facing two of the best teams in the region and a very talented Division III team, the Bulldogs came out victorious in all three matchups. The Black and Gold defeated Harvard 3-2, downed MIT 4-1 and got past BU 3-2.

"Taking 10-of-15 matches from MIT, BU and Harvard is a testament to who we are and what we have become," head coach Ron Gendron said. "After taking 3-of-5 from Harvard, arguably our best showing as a young DI program, we just went back to work. Taking down BU and MIT was the next job in front of us and we just went and did our job and took care of business in a very workman like way."

Against the Crimson, the Bulldogs received dominant performances from senior Zachary Morris (Garden City, N.Y.) and junior Max Vogt (Fair Oaks, Calif.). The two posted victories in singles competition, while the team of senior Ernesto Arguello (Managua, Nicaragua) and freshman Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) took home the victory in doubles play.

Bryant edged past BU thanks to strong play from sophomore Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) and classmate Christian Duarte (Dallas, Texas) in singles and freshmen Joshua Kilger (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Nick Lamart (Raleigh, N.C.) in doubles. Welsh downed Mario Sandoval 6-3, 6-1 and Duarte defeated Emilio Teran, 7-5, 6-2. In doubles, Kilger and Lamart teamed to earn a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

It was more of the same from the Bulldogs against MIT as they swept the singles. Kuhar, Welsh, Lamart and freshman Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) all posted victories to lead the Black and Gold. Kuhar won 6-3, 6-2, Welsh won 6-2, 6-0, Lamart won 8-5 and Lorenz won 6-0, 6-1.

"It was a true Bulldog effort and now we will begin our preparation for the ITA Regionals," Gendron said.

The ITA Regionals will take place from Thursday Oct. 16 through Tuesday Oct. 21 in Flushing, N.Y.
