Fasano, Lodge earn Gold in final day of NEC Indoor Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Senior Melissa Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass.) won the mile and freshman Chris Fasano (Lake Grove, N.Y.) took home gold in the shot put as the Bryant University track & field team closed out the 2018 Northeast Conference Championships on Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Center on Staten Island.

COACH SWITZER'S COMMENTS

"This was a very big weekend for our program," Bryant head track & field coach Mitchell Switzer said. "We've talked all year about what it means to compete and had that be a major focus coming into the weekend. The energy, excitement, and passion of this team really shined through this weekend. I'm happy with the progress we have made as a team thus far and can't wait to see where the team takes this during the outdoor season."

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN)

  • Fasano set a school and personal record in the shot put, recording a distance of 15.70 meters. Fasano won the meet by 0.01 meters and earned the mark of 15.70 on his final throw. He earned 10 points in the event, the most by a Bryant thrower at the NEC Championships.
  • Sophomore Brian Murray (Westford, Mass.) finished eighth in the finals of the 400-meter dash. Murray finished with a time of 49.71. Murray's time was fifth-fastest in program history.
  • Senior Ryan Poholek (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished sixth in the mile. The senior earned a time of 4:17.45 and took home three points for the Bulldogs.
  • Poholek teamed up with freshman Jordan Dagrin (Providence, R.I.), sophomore Christopher Wrenn (Norton, Mass.) and junior Alec Binette (Glastonbury, Conn.) to take home a fourth-place finish in the distance medley relay. The foursome finished with a time of 10:19.78, the second-fastest time in the Bryant record books.
  • Freshman Jacob Borgia (Westborough, Mass.) scored in the pole vault for Bryant. Borgia cleared a height of 3.95 meters.
  • A day after scoring in the 3K, junior Matt McGovern (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored in the 5K run on Saturday with a time of 15:10.98.

TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN)

  • Lodge's time in the mile was nearly 15 seconds faster than the time she posted yesterday in qualifying. She finished the mile with a time of 4:55.66, narrowly missing out on her own school record by less than a half-second. Lodge qualified for the ECAC Championships with her performance Saturday.
  • Sophomore Olivia Weiss (Newton, N.J.) finished third in the same event, coming in at 4:59.52, which is second all-time in the Bryant record books. She improved by 10 seconds over her previous personal record in the event.
  • Sophomore Emily Cluck (Johnson City, N.Y.) earned a silver medal in the 400-meter dash. Cluck clocked in a time of 55.66 seconds. Cluck's time is also second-best ever at Bryant and the highest finish by a sprinter in program history in the indoor event.
  • Classmate Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) earned bronze in the 800-meter. Sullivan finished the event with a time of 2:13.19 and earned six points for the Bulldogs. The sophomore's time was the fastest in Bryant history.
  • Lodge, Weiss, Cluck, and Sullivan teamed up to take home gold in the women's distance medley. They finished with a time of 11:59.22, 18 seconds faster than second-place Central Connecticut. The time on Saturday was five seconds faster than the previous record that they set earlier this season and also set an NEC Indoor Championships meet record.
  • Junior Shirley Carrington (Dorchester, Mass.) teamed with Lodge, Weiss, and Sullivan in the 4x400 relay. The Bulldogs came in seventh in the event, picking up two points, with a time of 4:06.88, fourth-fastest in program history.

MEET NOTES

  • Fasano took home NEC Most Outstanding Rookie honors along with the NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer (throws) award. He becomes the first Bryant athlete to do so.
  • Lodge took home gold in the mile for the second-straight year.
  • Each of the relays that competed for Bryant scored points in the final tallies.
  • The women's team earned 42 points and finished eighth at the NEC Championships, tying the Black and Gold's best-ever finish.
  • The men's team finished eighth overall and scored 26.5 points, the most-ever by Bryant in the NEC Indoor Championships.

UP NEXT

Qualifying Bulldogs will next be in action on March 3 and 4 when the ECAC/IC4A Championships will be held in Boston. After that, the outdoor season begins on March 31 when the Bulldogs host the Black and Gold Invitational.
