DeMeo, James have record-setting efforts in Bryant's win at Niagara

NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. – Led by more record-setting afternoons from juniors Jess DeMeo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and Meredith James (Essex Falls, N.J.), the Bryant University women's lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Niagara 18-8 on Saturday afternoon.

COACH BATCHELLER'S COMMENTS

"We were able to take control of the game from the very beginning going on a five goal run. From [James and Britton] on the draws, to our offensive aggressiveness to our defensive stops, we left our mark on the field today. I'm really proud of each individual for bringing out the best of themselves today to help us achieve the win. We are looking forward to being back on our home turf this week against UMass Lowell."

KEY MOMENT

Bryant was off and running in the early going, scoring the game's first nine goals with three each coming from DeMeo and sophomore Caitlin Breglia (Long Beach, N.Y.).

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Bryant scored three goals inside the first five minutes with DeMeo, Breglia and senior Catlin Brown (San Diego, Calif.) getting the Bulldogs started offensively.
• The Bulldogs then scored five in a span of 4:06 as Breglia scored two and dished an assist to senior Kristie VosWinkel (Newtown, Conn.) as well.
• Redshirt-sophomore Melissa Wamp (Florham Park, N.J.) and DeMeo also added goals during the time period.
• After DeMeo added one to make it 9-0, Shea Swartwout led a Niagara run that cut Bryant's lead to 9-4 at the break.
• The second half was the DeMeo show as she scored five of Bryant's six goals with the sixth coming from Breglia.
• Sophomore Leah Nocera (Westwood, Mass.) and VosWinkel added Bryant's final two tallies, giving them their final lead at 10.

STATS

• DeMeo finished the day with nine points, adding an assist in the late portion of the game.
• James recorded a total of 13 draw controls, besting the previous record by two.
• Breglia added six points on the day, scoring five goals and recording an assist.
• Bryant finished with six different goalscorers.
• The Bulldogs outshot the Purple Eagles 31-27.
• Led by James and junior Lauren Britton (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), Bryant dominated the draw controls, winning 20 of the 28.
• Bryant's defense caused 13 turnovers on the day.

NOTES

• DeMeo also scored eight goals against Harvard a week ago when she originally tied the overall program record.
• Breglia matched her career high, last matched against Harvard last weekend.
• Britton equaled her career high in draw controls with seven, also set in the game with Harvard last weekend.
• James' previous career-high was seven.
• The junior James broke Caitlin Hansen's program record of 11 draw controls, set on April 2, 2008 at Merrimack.
• After allowing 34 goals in their previous two games, Bryant's defense clamped down, allowing only 14 goals in the previous 120 minutes.
• DeMeo's eight goals matches Allison Faiola's program record, set twice during the 2008 season.
