Doerrman, Messina take home silver on day three of the NECs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Juniors Lauren Doerrman (Oley, Pa.) and Julia Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.) both earned silver medals to lead the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team on day three of the Northeast Conference Championships in Cambridge, Mass.

The Bulldogs have now accumulated 396 points and are in third place. Central Connecticut is in first with 536 points and Wagner remains in second with 508 points.

Doerrman earned her second career medal, while Messina earned her first career trip to the podium. Doerrman finished second in the 400 IM with a school-record time of 4:24.40. She broke her old record that was set at the 2013 championships. Messina broke the school record in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.62, finishing second and earning a silver medal.

Bryant had a dominant day in the 100 fly sending three to the A final and two to the B final. Jamie Schaefer (Durham, N.C.) finished fourth with a time of 56.16, Dana Yu (Bridgewater, N.J.) was sixth (57.03) and Samantha Torrez (Whittier, Calif.) earned a seventh-place finish (57.24). Taylor Poliseno (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) won the B final, finishing ninth with a time of 57.30. Kristie Chan (San Francisco, Calif.) finished 14th with a time of 1:00.10.

Erin Daly (Reading, Mass.) and Mara Valenzuela (Bridgewater, N.J.) headlined five finalists in the 200 free. Daly finished sixth with a time of 1:53.46 and Valenzuela was seventh (1:53.65). Valeria Watson (Mexico City, Mexico) finished 10th (1:53.72), Caitlin Hanahoe (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was 14th (1:55.60) and Elisabeth Schauer (Pelham, N.Y.) was 15th (1:56.12).

Alexandra Morreale (Short Hills, N.J.) finished eighth in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.63. Elizabeth Rose (Somerset, Mass.) joined her, finishing 11th with a time of 1:10.02.

In the 100 back, Schauer finished fourth with a time of 56.93, while Mackenzie Kirk (San Jose, Calif.) finished eighth (58.61). Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.) earned a 10th-place finish (58.10) and Hanahoe was 16th with a time of 1:00.33.

The Bulldogs also earned a bronze medal in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:51.16. Schauer, Messina, Schaefer and Valenzuela teamed up on the medal-winning relay.
