Cluck, McGovern shine on Day 1 of NEC Outdoor Championships

EMMITSBURG, MD. -- Sophomore Emily Cluck (Johnson City, N.Y.) and junior Matt McGovern (Long Beach, N.Y.) ran very well in the 400m and 10k, respectively, helping the Bryant University track and field team get off to a strong start at the 2018 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at Mount St. Mary's.

COACH SWITZER'S COMMENTS

"We had some outstanding performances across the board today. Our senior class really stepped up and pushed the team. They've put a lot into this program and it is great to see the team step up with them. We are in a great spot heading into day two. I do not think there is another team better prepared to be successful in tough weather than us."

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN)

  • Freshman Chris Fasano (Lake Grove, N.Y.) hit a mark of 15.24m in the shot put, which was good for second in the event.
  • McGovern finished in fifth in the 10k with a time of 32.27.37.
  • Senior Robert McCabe (Marlborough, Mass.) bested his personal time with a 33.53.38 in the event as well, totaling five team points for the Bulldogs between the two.
  • Both senior Ryan Poholek (Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Christopher Wrenn (Norton, Mass.) qualified for the final in the 800m. Poholek qualified with a top time of 1:55.33, while Wrenn placed sixth in the prelims with a time of 1:57.62.
  • Freshman Jacob Borgia (Westborough, Mass.) finished eighth in the pole vault, marking at four meters even.

TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN)

  • Cluck qualified first in the 400m with a time of 55.24. That paced her 1.18 seconds behind the second-place competitor in the prelims, Hanne Claus of Robert Morris.
  • Sophomores Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) and Olivia Weiss (Newton, N.J.) qualified for the finals in the 1500m, along with senior Sarah Lapham (Greenwich, N.Y.). Sullivan and Weiss finished third and fourth in the prelims with times of 4:51.36 and 4:51.89, respectively. Lapham qualified 11th with a time of 4:56.29.
  • Junior Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) just missed qualifying for the 400m but smashed her personal record with a time of 58.29.

MEET NOTES

  • Overall, the men scored 17 points on Day 1, which is good for sixth.
  • Lapham qualified for her first career final, finishing in the Top 12 of the 1500 prelims.
  • Perryman's 58.29 in the 400m ranks sixth all-time. Cluck missed the school record by 0.21 seconds.
  • McGovern broke the school record in the 10k, previously set in 2013. McCabe's time sits 6th all-time.

UP NEXT

Day 2 of the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin tomorrow, with action in the Women's Hammer Throw, Men's Javelin and the Men's and Women's Triple Jump commencing at 9:30 a.m. The final events of the day will be the Men's and Women's 4x400 relay, which commence close to 4 p.m.
