Cowan Pitches a Gem as Bryant Baseball Defeats AIC 1-0 Sunday

BRYANT BASEBALL DEFEATS AIC 1-0 SUNDAY

BOX SCORE

SMITHFIELD, RI - Sophomore right-hander Luke Cowan (Wilton, Conn.) pitched eight strong innings allowing just three hits while striking out eight to lift the Bryant University baseball team to a 1-0 win over visiting American International College Sunday afternoon.   With the win, Bryant improves to 16-30 overall (14-12 Northeast-10).

 Cowan - 8 strikeouts Sunday

Cowan, making his 10th start of the season, got a strong defensive effort from his Bulldog teammates to earn his fourth win of the season.  Allowing just two hits through five innings, Cowan got out of a sixth inning jam after AIC's Drew Kohl led off the inning with a walk.  Andrew Martirano attempted to sacrifice Kohl into scoring position but ended up bunting into a double play.

Bryant catcher Nick Tucarella (Salem, NH) made a strong throw to get Martirano in time at first base and with Kohl trying to reach third, Bryant first baseman Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.) made a good throw to teammate Paul Novakowski (Prospect, Conn.) at third in time to get Kohl.   Jeff Rustico would follow with a walk, but Cowan would settle down and getting Neal Quesnel to hit a soft roller to short as the Bulldogs were able to get the force at second.

AIC (12-22, 8-10 NE-10) received a strong pitching performance from Brett Cooley.  The junior limited Bryant to just one hit through six innings, but the Bulldogs tagged Cooley for the game's only run in the seventh as Mark Dondero (Medfield, Mass.) lined a single up the middle with two runners on, but as Martinaro fielded the ball, his throw to first went wide allowing Novakowski to come around from second to score the only run of the game.

Cowan walked just three batters in the game before giving way to Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.)  who picked up his fifth save with a perfect ninth.  Cooley held Bryant to three hits and struck out three to take the loss.  Bryant will host Pace University on Tuesday afternoon (3:30 pm).
