SMITHFIELD, R.I. -  The Bryant baseball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon as they lost to the Owls from Southern Connecticut 8-5 and 3-1 at the Bryant Baseball Complex.

In the first game, the Bulldogs led 5-4 going to the ninth, but closer Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.) allowed four runs on five singles, including a go-ahead two-run single by Chris Barile.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Bryant broke through with three runs capped off on a two-run double by RF Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) that scored C Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, CT) and 1B Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.)

Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) got the start on the hill and allowed four runs (two earned) in six innings, while striking out five. He surrendered a run in the sixth inning that gave SCSU the 4-3 lead, but the Bulldogs came right back scoring two, with 3B Jason Alexander (Simsbury, CT) getting the big hit with a run-scoring double.

In the second game, starter Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) surrendered three first-inning runs, highlighted by a right-center field triple by Jose Ortiz Jr.

Almeida settled down from there, allowing just three more hits and no runs. He was the hard luck loser, seeing his record fall to 2-3 on the season after hurling seven innings.

Toby Kylin silenced the Bulldog bats, taking a no-hitter into the fifth, before Ferguson crushed a double to left-center.

They were kept off the scoreboard until the ninth when CF Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) singled home 3B Dave Muscatello (Hopkinton, Mass.). That brought LF T.J. Magnell (Leominster, Mass.) to the plate as the tying run, but he flied out to right field to end the game.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the eighth inning against Ben Starta but DH Mark Dondero (Medfield, Mass.), who has two hits in the game, lined out to second base to end the rally.

Mike Connors picked up saves in both games, for the Owls who saw their 12-game losing streak come to an end.

The Bulldogs (13-11, 6-2 NE-10) will visit Saint Rose Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
