Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Pace
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant Baseball team swept a crucial doubleheader from the Pace Setters behind timely hitting and clutch pitching 4-3 and 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the Bryant Baseball Complex.
In the first game, RF Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) led the way offensively with two hits and three RBIs. He got the Bulldog on the board in the second driving home 1B Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.) with a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly from 3B Jason Alexander (Simsbury, CT).
With Bryant ahead 3-2 in the eighth, Ferguson came through with a key two-out single that plated LF T.J. Magnell (Leominster, Mass.), with what would be the decisive run.
Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, CT) (3-1) notched his third straight win for the Bulldogs, striking out five and allowing just one earned run in six innings, while Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.) got his sixth save despite allowing a run in the ninth.
In the second game, Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) continued his outstanding season, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing just one run while striking out six to improve his record to 3-0.
The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs, making the most of a dropped fly ball with two outs and no one out. Following the dropped fly, DH Mark Dondero (Medfield, Mass.) singled home Ferguson. Dondero then stole second and scored on an Alexander single.
That was more than enough run support for Cobb, who gave way to Eric Polvani (Wallingford, CT) in the eighth with two out and two on. Polvani got Jack Cawley to ground out to end the inning, and then Vuolo retired the side in order in the ninth to get his second save of the day.
The Bulldogs (19-12, 9-3 NE-10) will close out their three-game series with Pace Monday (3:30 p.m.).
