Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Lowell; Can Finish Second in Conference with Sweep Saturday

LOWELL, MASS. – The Bryant baseball team split a doubleheader with UMass Lowell, but they won the conference game (lost the non-conference game), setting up the possibility that they can finish second in the conference with a sweep of the Riverhawks Saturday at the Bryant Baseball Complex.

Behind 8.2 innings from Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, CT), the Bulldogs defeated the Riverhawks 3-1 in game one. Loh (6-2) struck out one and walked one while allowing just six hits.

Bryant got on the board in the third behind a two-out triple from DH Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, RI) that plated LF T.J. Magnell (Leominster, Mass.).

The Bulldogs got two more in the fourth as RF Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) singled up the middle, scoring SS Pat McKenna (Orange, CT). Ferguson then scored on a RBI single from C Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, CT).

That was more than enough for Loh, who held the second-best team in the Northeast region scoreless until the ninth. Adam Vuolo (Walpole, CT) got the game’s final out to earn his league-leading 11th save.

In the second game, trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Bryant evened the score as Stone singled home Vigurs.

But the Riverhawks struck for four runs (two earned) in the fifth off Bulldog start Luke Cowan (Atlanta, GA).

That was plenty of run support for Kevin Graham, who hurled a complete-game five-hitter for the Riverhawks.

The Bulldogs did win the more important game however, getting the conference victory. They are now 29-18, and 21-7 in conference and trail Lowell by two games, with two games remaining on the docket Saturday against the Riverhawks.

Saturday’s doubleheader will start at noon. In between games, Bulldog seniors Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Mike Upton (Chelmsford, Mass.) will be honored as part of senior day.
