BRYANT BASEBALL DROPS NEC DOUBLEHEADER AT MOUNT ST. MARY'S SATURDAY

Game 1 – Mount St. Mary’s 8, Bryant 2 - Box Score
Game 2 -  Mount St. Mary's 8, Bryant 4 - Box Score

Senior Jeff Vigurs tied the school career doubles record with the 54th of his career in game one Saturday at Mount St. Mary's.

EMMITSBURG, Md. –  Just three outs from earning a series opening win before rain halted play Friday, the Bryant University baseball team dropped a doubleheader Saturday at Mount St. Mary's by scores of 8-2 and 8-4.

Friday’s rainout will resume in the ninth inning on Sunday.

In the opener Saturday, Mount St. Mary’s scored seven runs on eight hits against starter Eric Polvani (Wallingford, Conn.) en route to an 8-2 win.  The Mount plated two runs in the first against the Bulldog ace thanks to a pair of infield hits and a two-out single up the middle by Shane Eyler.

After adding another run in the second to make it 3-0, the Bulldogs pulled to within a run of the lead thanks to an RBI double to center by Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) followed by another double by Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) to make it 3-2.

For Vigurs, it was the 54th double of his career, tying Scott Yankee for the school's all-time career doubles record.  Campbell is also chasing the Yankee and Vigurs for the record as Campbell's double was the 52nd of his career.

But The Mount would score two more runs in the bottom half of the third and tacked on three more in the sixth to pick up the win.

Polvani went just 5 2/3 innings, equaling his shortest outing this season.  The senior righty struck out five and walked two before giving way to Matt Griswold (Berlin, Conn.).

Bryant managed just six hits against MSM starter Brady Feigl, two by Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.). The lefty struck out 10 and walked just three.

Bryant freshman Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.) had his season-best hitting streak snapped at 14 games.

Things looked better in the second game as the Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by Campbell to left field and RBI single by Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.)

The Mount would cut the Bryant lead in half with two runs in the second against starter David O’Brien (Whitman, Mass.) and would rally with three runs in the fourth, taking its first lead of the game on a two-run double Michael Foster down the right field line against reliever John Michael Ryan (Worcester, Mass.).

English again led the way with two hits for the Bulldogs in the game.  Bryant and Mount St. Mary’s will resume Friday’s halted game on Sunday prior to the start of the originally scheduled nine-inning game to close out the weekend series.
