SMITHFIELD, RI – Concluding a brilliant career only a month ago, Bryant University baseball standout Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) will now continue his career at the professional level after he was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 22nd round (670th overall) during Tuesday’s Major League Baseball draft.

Vigurs, a senior catcher, becomes the second player in as many years drafted, following former shortstop Pat McKenna who was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 27th round of the 2009 MLB Draft.

A co-captain and backbone off the Bryant defense, Vigurs started in all 56 games this past season, helping the Bulldogs to their first Northeast Conference regular season title with a 34-22 record and 25-7 record in league play.

During his senior season, Vigurs was named Second Team All-NEC and earned Division I Second Team All-New England honors and capped off his career with his name etched all over the school record book.

The school’s all-time career doubles leader with 61, Vigurs finished second all-time in school history with 277 career hits, second with 237 career games played, second with 872 career at-bats, second with 1,135 career putouts.

Defensively, he finished his career with a .993 fielding percentage, committing only nine errors in 1,301 plays.  This season, he threw out 18 runners attempting to steal and finished his career throwing out an amazing 74 runners.
