SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University senior right hander Eric Polvani (Wallingford, Conn. / Sheehan) has been the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week after throwing a gem in last Friday’s 3-0 win over Quinnipiac.

Polvani pitched a complete-game one-hitter to earn the victory in Game 2 of Bryant’s road sweep of the Bobcats as the senior right-hander took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on the way to his 20th career win at the collegiate level.  After striking out the first two batters of the sixth, Polvani surrendered a single to the Bobcats’ Chris Migani.  Going the distance for the fourth time this season, Polvani struck out nine Bobcats and walked two over of 7.0 innings of work.  He also induced nine groundball outs.

The Bulldogs host Sacred Heart University this week for a key four-game series and first place in the conference on the line.  Bryant (31-21, 22-6 NEC), playing just its second season of Division I baseball, is currently in first place in the conference standings by three games over Sacred Heart.

Polvani comes into the week with a 6-5 record and 3.28 ERA – third best in the NEC.  His 83 strikeouts this year is an NEC best as is his 90.2 innings pitched.  He will get the start on Thursday at noon where he will face Pioneer graduate student Jared Balbach who is 7-3 on the year and owns a 3.96 ERA.

Polvani needs only two strikeouts to set the school’s all-time single season strikeout record of 86 held by Doug Johnson in 2002.  His start Thursday will set a new career appearances record as the game will mark the 83rd time he takes the hill.
