When Plainville's David Soltis officially joins the Bryant
University baseball team, he'll be joining another local star in
former Berlin High pitcher Matt Griswold.
Griswold went 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 16 appearances as a sophomore
for the Bulldogs last year.
"The easiest thing about coming back as a sophomore is you're more
familiar with everything," Griswold said. "Freshman year you don't
know what to expect. I feel like it's easier to work harder. I felt
a lot more comfortable."
He's currently pitching for the Riverhead (N.Y.) Tomcats in the
Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League and was slated to make his
fourth start Friday night.
"After pitching limited innings as a freshman, he really took a
step forward this season, establishing a consistent role for
himself out of the bullpen," Bryant head coach Jamie Pinzino
said.
"Matt became a key setup guy for us, often pitching the
seventh inning, and appearing in many tight situations."
Griswold also gained from pitching in the Mountain Collegiate
Baseball League in Colorado last summer. The ACBL, he feels, is a
step up.
"This league is better than I thought it would be," he said. "There
are some legit kids here."
Pinzino agreed that Griswold's summer visit on Long Island should
benefit him.
"He really progressed with his fastball command, and we look
for him to be a big contributor again next season," Pinzino said of
the former All-Herald right-hander. "Pitching this summer in the
Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League is getting him some valuable
experience."
