Errors undo Bulldogs in 6-1 loss to Liberty on Saturday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior left-hander Trevor Lacosse (Watervliet, N.Y.) struck out a career-high eight batters over five innings but four errors led to six unearned runs as the Bryant University baseball team fell to Liberty, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Baseball Field.
Playing in 30-degree weather, the Bulldogs (0-5) were one-hit by Flames (5-3) left-hander Victor Cole to make things worse. The Black and Gold committed four errors and all nine runs Liberty has scored this weekend have been unearned.
Liberty broke the deadlock with three unearned runs in the third. Clay Keranen singled to start the inning and advanced to third on back-to-back bunts by the Flames. Will Shepherd then hit a chopper to short that was misplayed, allowing Keranen to score from third. Liberty made the miscue hurt as Alex Close doubled into the left field corner and Andrew Yacyk singled up the middle to bring home two more runs.
The Flames added three more unearned runs in the seventh inning. With runners on first and second with two outs, Close hit a liner to short that was misplayed, allowing a run to score. A wild pitch brought home the second run and a throwing error on a ground ball to third plated the final run of the inning.
Liberty's six unearned runs overshadowed another outstanding performance from Lacosse on the mound. The left-hander recorded a new career high in strikeouts for the second-straight outing and has now struck out 15 in his first two starts. Lacosse struck out the side in the first and struck out five total in the first two innings. Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass.) allowed three unearned runs on two hits over two innings. Ryan Johnson (East Falmouth, Mass.) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
Sophomore Matt Albanese (East Haddam, Conn.) broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double in the top of the ninth. Albanese then stole third and scored on a sac fly from senior John Mullen (Walpole, Mass.).
Cole walked two and struck out eight in a complete-game victory for the Flames. Yacyk and Keranen each had two hits, while Close scored two runs.
The Bulldogs and Flames are scheduled to wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
