Baseball wraps up spring trip with three-game series at Coastal Carolina

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team wraps up its spring break trip with a three-game series against Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., this weekend.

The Bulldogs and Chanticleers will meet for the first time in program history Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. They wrap up the series with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.

SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
Coastal Carolina enters the weekend series fresh off a 13-2 victory over No. 11 North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon. The Chanticleers are 11-6 on the season with other key wins over Old Dominion, Canisius, Georgia Tech and NC State. Coastal has made 12 NCAA appearances over the last 14 seasons.

The Chanticleers are hitting .249 as a team but are averaging over seven runs a game this season. They have posted 36 doubles and 16 home runs over the first 17 games of the year. Anthony Marks is hitting a team-leading .333 with five doubles, six stolen bases and 18 runs scored. Casey Schroeder leads the team with six home runs and 13 RBI, while Connor Owings, G.K. Young and Michael Paez have all hit two home runs.

On the mound, Coastal Carolina has posted a team ERA of 4.22. The staff has struck out 136 and walked 58 so far this year. Alex Cunningham is the teams Friday night starter and is coming back after missing the majority of his first two seasons with arm surgery. He is 2-0 with a 3.42 ERA and rookie righty Zack Hopeck is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in four starts. Austin Kerr is a go-to arm out of the pen, posting a 3-0 record and a 2.04 ERA in nine appearances.

BRYANT AGAINST THE BIG SOUTH
Bryant is 4-7 against current members of the Big South. Bryant is 3-4 against Radford and is 1-3 against Liberty. The Bulldogs defeated the Flames in 2012 but were swept in a three-game series two weekends ago in Lynchburg, Va.

KARINCHAK TURNS IN GEM
Freshman James Karinchak turned in a masterpiece in his first collegiate start against Towson. The rookie right-hander struck out 10 and allowed just three hits in throwing his first career complete game and shutout.

FABIO HITS STRIDE AT TOWSON
Cole Fabio hit his stride at Towson and is now Bryant's leading hitter. Starting with the Tigers, Fabio is now hitting .571 (8-14) with two RBI and seven runs scored over his last four games. He had a pair of three hit games against Towson and went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple at Old Dominion.

ZAROZNY PRODUCING RUNS
AJ Zarozny has been an RBI machine his last five games, picking up seven against Towson and Old Dominion. He has now had a hit and driven in a run in four of the last five contests. He tripled, scored and drove in a run on Tuesday at Old Dominion.
