Bulldogs host UConn in battle of regional powers Wednesday

GAME NOTES

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team welcomes regional rival Connecticut to Conaty Park on Wednesday for a key non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

After splitting their opening Northeaster Conference series of the season, the Bulldogs (10-15, 2-2 NEC) will face the Huskies (23-13, 5-4), top-ranked team in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) poll, for the eighth time since 2010. UConn holds a slim 4-3 advantage in the series but Bryant has won three of the last four meetings.

Despite going 2-3 last week, the Black and Gold showed signs of coming around offensively. They hit .324 on the week with 13 doubles, five triples and three home runs. Sophomore Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass.) continued his torrid pace, going 8-for-19 (.421) with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored. He has hit two home runs in each of the last three weeks and leads the team with six on the year. Senior John Mullen (Walpole, Mass.) had another good week going 8-for-22) and enters Wednesday's game just two hits shy of becoming the 16th player in program history to reach 200 hits.

Freshman lefty Justin Snyder (Georgetown, Mass.) will make his third-straight mid-week start for the Bulldogs on Wednesday. He allowed three runs on just two hits over 3.1 innings last week against Rhode Island. On the year, he is 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA in 16.1 innings.

The Huskies have been the best team in New England for a majority of the year and currently have an RPI of 34. They took two-of-three from No. 12 Central Florida over the weekend and moved to 7-1 against New England opponents with a 7-0 victory over Fairfield on Tuesday. Vinny Siena leads the offense with a .367 average, nine doubles, four home runs, 30 RBI and 36 runs scored. Max McDowell leads the team with six home runs and Jack Sundberg has 23 stolen bases, 35 runs scored, 30 walks and a .434 OBP.

Bryant will face freshman righty William Montgomerie. He is 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA in seven appearances and three starts. Montgomerie has allowed 12 runs on 16 hits, walked 10 and struck out 11 over 19 innings. As a team, the Huskies have posted a 2.65 ERA.

Wednesday's game will be broadcast live and free of charge on NECFrontRow.com.
