Baseball makes trip to Chestnut Hill on Wednesday to face BC

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team will look to get back to .500 this afternoon when it travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to take on Boston College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

The Bulldogs (17-18) and the Eagles (23-21) are meeting for the first time since 2013 and the ninth time overall. BC holds a 6-2 advantage in the series but Bryant won the last meeting, 13-2.

With a big NEC series against Sacred Heart looming this weekend, the Black and Gold will look to get on track Wednesday at BC. The Bulldogs are coming off a weekend split with LIU Brooklyn but are 15-7 after starting the year 2-11. Junior shortstop Dan Cellucci (Sudbury, Mass.) returned last Friday after missing all but three of the first 31 games of the season. He started all four games at short, going 7-for-10 with five runs scored.

Sophomore Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass.) also had a monster weekend, going 9-for-15 against the Blackbirds. He had three hits and two triples in the first game of the series and then collected two hits in each of the final three games. Bingel is now hitting .340 with four doubles, three triples, six home runs and 18 RBI.

Boston College returns home after earning an 8-4 victory over URI on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles are 9-14 in ACC play and picked a huge series sweep of nationally ranked Georgia Tech. BC is without Chris Shaw, the top professional prospect in New England, however. The power-hitting outfielder, who is batting .339 with eight doubles, 11 home runs and 41 RBI, injured his hand in early April. Michael Strem has picked up the slack, leading the team with 50 hits, while scoring 27 runs. Blake Butera is second on the team with 21 RBI.

Eric Stone is scheduled to start for the Eagles on Wednesday. Cousin of former Bryant standout Dylan Stone ('09), Eric is 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA, 20 strikeouts and just five walks in 23.2 innings.
