Rinn drives in six as Bulldogs down FDU in game one Saturday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Robby Rinn (Warwick, R.I.) hit two doubles, a home run and drove in a career-high six runs to lead the Bryant University baseball team to a 14-4 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Conaty Park.

The Bulldogs (22-20, 13-5) hit eight doubles and two home runs in the contest. Bryant has now defeated the Knights (17-21, 8-10) 11-straight times dating back to 2012.

Things didn't start well for the Bulldogs in game one as FDU posted four runs in the top of the third. Bobby Romano doubled to start the inning and Matt McCann brought him home with a double of his own. Riley Moonan then doubled off the left field wall to score two and Joel Roman capped the inning with an RBI single to right.

Bryant didn't waste any time responding as it scored seven runs in the bottom of the third. Senior John Mullen (Walpole, Mass.) walked to start the inning and scored all the way from first on a double from junior Dan Cellucci (Sudbury, Mass.). Senior Jordan Mountford (Guelph, Ont.) then walked and sophomore Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass.) doubled to bring home a run. Rinn followed with a two-run double to right field to tie the game at 4-4.

Sophomore Cole Fabio (Mahwah, N.J.) singled and then stole second to put runners on second and third with one out. Junior Buck McCarthy (Saugus, Mass.) then hit a ground ball to third that Romano fielded but his throw to first went down the right field line allowing both runners to score and give Bryant the lead. Junior AJ Zarozny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) capped the inning with a sac fly to make it 7-4.

The Bulldogs added to their lead with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Bingel started the fourth inning rally with a two-out double to right field. Rinn followed with a towering two-run home run to right field, his seventh of the year. Fabio then doubled and scored on an RBI single from sophomore Joseph Paparelli (Preston, Conn.).

In the fifth, the first two Bulldogs were retired but the next six reached to score four runs. Mountford started the rally with a single, Bingel was hit by a pitch and Rinn scored both with a double off the top of the wall in left center. Fabio then yanked a two-run home run down the left field line for his second of the year.

Freshman James Karinchak (Walden, N.Y.) earned his league-leading seventh win of the year with six innings of work. Denied of his fifth-straight complete game, Karinchak allowed four runs on seven hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out eight. He retired the final seven batters he faced. Senior Alex Lagos (Wrentham, Mass.) pitched a scoreless seventh.

Rinn (3-4, 6RBI, 3R) and Fabio (3-3, 2RBI, 3R) led the way with three hits apiece. Bingel finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored and McCarthy and Paparelli each chipped in two hits.
