FDU defeats Bryant, 10-3; Game two postponed to Sunday

TEANECK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson freshman right-hander Chris Kachmar struck out 10 over 6 2/3 innings  to lead the Knights to a 10-3 victory over the Bryant University baseball team on Saturday morning at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

The loss is the first for the Bulldogs (18-6, 7-1 NEC) at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. The Knights (14-13, 5-4) used a pair of three-run innings to earn the decisive victory.

**Saturday's second game was postponed to Sunday and the two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. The first game will be seven innings and the second game will be a nine-inning contest.**

One of the top rookies in the NEC, Kachmar turned in one of the best starts of his young career. He allowed just three hits, walked six and struck out 10. Kachmar walked two in the first but worked around it and then was able to strand the bases loaded in the second. It was the only threat he faced as he allowed just four baserunners over the final five innings. Kachmar allowed a one-out double in the second and then didn't surrender another hit until the sixth.

Kachmar missed out on a complete game as a hit, walk and a two-out error ended his day in the seventh. He was relieved by Danny Demetrops and senior Robby Rinn (Warwick, R.I.) greeted him with a long fly ball to deep right center. FDU outfielder Shane Siebler jumped at the fence and brought the ball back but couldn't make the catch. All three runs scored and Rinn pulled into third base with a triple.

FDU scored single runs in the first and third innings before putting the game away with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. In the first, Matt McCann singled with one out, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a two-out single up the middle from Pat McClure.

After Dylan Sprague made it 2-0 with a solo home run in the third, the Knights put the game away in the fourth and fifth. Jason Fatzinger and Shane Siebler singled to open the inning and John Giakas bought both home with a two-out, two-run double down the left field line. Joel Roman followed with a two-out single to right to make it 5-0.

In the fifth, Bobby Romano reached on a single with one out and came around to score on a double from Fatzinger. McCann added a sac fly and Giakas delivered a check-swing RBI single to make it 8-0. The Knights completed their scoring with two unearned runs in the sixth.

Junior Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass.) suffered the loss, falling to 4-2 on the year. He allowed five runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out two in four innings. Redshirt junior Oliver Powers (Newtown, Conn.) and Garrett Hayward (Glendale, R.I.) combined to finish the game.

Every batter in the FDU lineup collected a hit on Saturday. Romano, Fatzinger, Siebler and Sprague all scored two runs and Giakas finished with three RBI.

The two teams will finish the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
