June summer ball update: Bulldogs performing well in top leagues
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – With the month of June in the rearview, Bryant Athletics is taking a look at home the members of the Bryant University baseball team are doing in their respective summer leagues.
Rising junior James Karinchak (Walden, N.Y.) has made two appearances for Chatham in the Cape Cod League. He is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in five innings. Karinchak struck out six and allowed just one hit in three shutout innings in his first appearance, but allowed five runs on four hits in two relief innings the following outing.
Rising sophomore Tyler Panno (Rivervale, N.J.) and rising juniors Justin Snyder (Georgetown, Mass.) and Ross Weiner (Woodbridge, Conn.) have all played a key role in Danbury's strong start to the year. Panno is second on the team with a .333 average (11-33) and has three RBI and six runs scored. Weiner is 1-0 with two saves in six appearances. He has walked five and struck out eight in 9 2/3 innings. Snyder has made nine appearances and has posted a 4.37 ERA. He has not allowed a run over his last 4 2/3 innings.
Rising senior Cole Fabio (Mahwah, N.J.) is off to a good start with Newport, hitting .250 with 10 RBI and six runs scored. He is second on the team in RBI and leads the team with eight stolen bases. Fabio has hit safely in 13 of his 15 starts and has reached safely in all but one game.
Rising sophomore Nick Angelini (Bedford, N.H.) and rising junior Logan Lessard (Cromwell, Conn.) have both helped Ocean State get off to its best start in franchise history. Angelini is hitting .262 with three doubles, five RBI, six runs scored, 11 walks and five stolen bases. He has reached base safely in all 12 games he has played in. Lessard is tied for the team lead with 10 appearances and has struck out 12 and walked 11 in nine innings. He has allowed just six hits.
Rising junior Mickey Gasper (Merrimack, N.H.) has been on fire for Nashua in the Futures League. Through 19 games, Gasper is second in the league in both average (.429) and doubles (9). He also has two home runs, has driven in 11, scored 15 times and leads the league with a .536 OBP. Gasper had a big day on June 28 going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored against Brockton.
Rising sophomores John Nollet (Storrs, Conn.) and Craig Lacey (Westfield, Mass.) are teammates with Pittsfield in the Futures League. Nollet is 3-for-22 so far this summer, while Lacey is 1-1 in four appearances. He has pitched 11 1/3 innings on the summer.
Rising senior Jacob Marotta (Bridgewater, Mass.) has played in 16 games so far this summer for Brockton. He is hitting .239 with two doubles, five RBI, seven runs scored and eight walks. Marotta has also stolen four bases, which is third on the team.
Incoming freshman Jimmy Titus (Stafford, Conn.) and Ryan Ward (Grafton, Mass.) are both playing in the Futures League this summer. Titus is hitting .270 (10-37) with three doubles, five RBI and three runs scored in 13 games for Bristol. Ward is hitting .452 (14-31) with six RBI and 12 runs scored in nine games for Worcester.
Jack Owens (Scituate, R.I.) redshirted his freshman season and is pitching for Albany in the Perfect Game League this summer. Owens has made six appearances out of the bullpen and has struck out 11 and walked five in 5 1/3 innings. He has allowed just two hits and has struck out two or more batters in all but one outing this summer.
Rising sophomore Nathan Wrighter (Windsor, N.Y.) is pitching for Oneonta in the Perfect Game League this summer. Wrighter is 1-1 with a 2.17 ERA in six appearances so far for the Outlaws. He has walked 13, struck out 11 and allowed 18 hits in 20 2/3 innings. Wrighter allowed just two hits and struck out four over four scoreless innings in his most recent outing.
Rising sophomore Steve Theetge (Cicero, N.Y.) is pitching for Savannah in the Coastal Plains League. He has made two appearances for the Bananas, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four innings. Theetge has walked four and struck out three.
