Team Pettoruto sweeps on Sunday to claim annual Black & Gold World Series

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Redshirt-freshmen Jack Owens (Scituate, R.I.) pitched out of bases-loaded, no-out jam in game one and freshman Chris Wright (Cumberland, R.I.) hit a three-run home run in the first inning of game two as Team Pettoruto swept the final two games of the Black & Gold World Series on Sunday afternoon at Conaty Park.

Team Pettoruto lost game one to Team Grenier, 10-9, last Thursday but rebounded with 8-2 and 6-1 victories on Sunday. In all, Team Pettoruto defeated Team Grenier 24-10 in skins.

The end of the Black & World Series ends the team portion of the Bulldogs fall season as they now begin individual workouts.

With his team leading 3-2 in the fourth, Owens inherited a bases-loaded, no-out situation. He escaped by striking out the first batter he faced before inducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Owens tossed two scoreless and didn't allow a hit.

Eight of the nine batters for Team Pettoruto registered a hit in the game, with freshman Gaby Cruz (Miami, Fla.) recording his second double of the World Series.

Wright started on the mound for Team Pettoruto and allowed two runs on two hits over four innings. He walked four and struck out five.

Freshman Jack Ipsen (Eatontown, N.J.) pitched the final two innings for Team Grenier and allowed one run on two hits and struck out two.

Sophomore Nick Angelini (Bedford, N.H.) provided both runs for Team Grenier with a two-run home run in the third.
