Angelini, Morgese earn NEC weekly honors

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University baseball sophomore Nick Angelini (Bedford, N.H.) and freshman Vito Morgese (Warwick, N.Y.) have been named Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Monday.

The honors are the first of the year for Angelini and Morgese and come after the duo helped the Bulldogs win all three games last week. Morgese becomes the fourth different Bulldog to earn NEC Rookie of the Week honors.

Angelini went 7-for-13 (.538) with two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored in three games. He opened his week with a 3-for-5 performance at Brown before going 4-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBI in a doubleheader against Sacred Heart. Against the Pioneers, Angelini went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the opener before going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in game two. He kick-started Bryant's five-run sixth inning in game two with an RBI single. Angelini has now hit safely in nine-straight games.

Morgese put the brakes on the Bulldogs' 10-game losing streak by earning his first collegiate victory with a dominant midweek start at Brown. He allowed just two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out five over 6 2/3 innings. In the longest start by a Bryant starter this year, Morgese retired 10 batters in a row before issuing a two-out walk in the seventh.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday when they welcome in-state rival Rhode Island to Conaty Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
