Gustin, Theetge sweep NEC weekly honors

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University baseball freshman Jake Gustin (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Steve Theetge (Syracuse, N.Y.) have swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards the league announced on Tuesday.

Gustin has been named the NEC Player and Rookie of the Week, while Theetge picked up NEC Pitcher of the Week honors for the sixth time in his career.

Bryant's starting second baseman in all three games at Abilene Christian, Gustin went 5-for-11 (.454) with a home run, a team-high five RBI and four runs scored. He also added a stolen bases and posted a .538 OBP. Gustin recorded at least one hit, one RBI and one run scored in all three games of the series, posting multiple RBI in two of the three games. In his collegiate debut, Gustin drove in two run and then made a diving play to start an inning-ending double play to help the Bulldogs hold a late lead. Gustin then homered for the first time in his career on Saturday and wrapped up his weekend with three hits and two RBI on Sunday.

Theetge helped Bryant clinch its opening weekend series against ACU with six scoreless innings of two-hit ball on Sunday. He walked two and struck out four to earn the 24th victory of his collegiate victory. Theetge allowed a single and a double in the second but dialed up one of his four strikeouts to strand runners on second and third. He didn't allow a hit the rest of the outing and retired 13 of the final 16 batters he faced.

Bryant heads to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for a three-game series against No. 1 LSU this weekend. The series opens Friday night at 8:00 p.m. EST. All three games will be streamed on SEC+.
