Rodriguez ties single-game hits record as Bryant downs Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Damaurys Rodriguez tied a Division I single-game record with five hits and Matt Smith had three hits and four RBI as the Bryant University baseball team earned a 14-10 victory over Brown on Wednesday afternoon at Murray Stadium.

Bryant and Brown were meeting for the first time since the 2019 season. With the win, the Bulldogs now own a 13-6 lead in the all-time series.

Rodriguez posted the 14th five-hit game in DI program history, finishing 5-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Smith went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI, while Alex Lane hit his fifth home run. Matt Woods was 2-for-2 with three walks and four runs scored and Carmine Petosa added a career-high three RBI as Bryant enjoyed its best offensive day of the season.

Ken Turner made his first start and appearance of the season for the Black and Gold, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate victory.

  • After the Bulldogs plated a run in the first, Lane quickly increased the lead with a three-run home run in the top of the second.                         

How it Happened

  • Woods got the Bulldogs going in the first, hammering one off the right field wall for a leadoff triple. Tuccillo brought him home with a sac fly two batters later.
  • In the second, Smith doubled to start the inning and Woods extended the frame with a two-out bunt single. Lane followed by launching a 2-1 breaking ball over the center field fence for a three-run home run.
  • Brown got a run back in the third as Jacob Burley led off with a solo home run to left.
  • The Bulldogs extended their lead with a five-run fourth inning. Three walks loaded the bases and Petosa brought all three home with a bases-clearing double into the left field corner. Smith would add a two-run double two batters later to make it 9-1.
  • Brown responded with a four-run fourth. Charles Crawford brought home two with a single and Gunner Boree tripled home two more to make it 9-5.
  • Smith came through again in the 6th inning, ripping a two-out, two-run single to right field to bring home Rodriguez and Petosa.  
  • Bryant tacked on three more runs in the seventh as Rodriguez singled home two and a third run scored on a fielding error.
  • Brown was able to plate five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 14-10.

  • Bryant posted season-highs in runs scored and hits.
  • Turner was making his season and Bryant debut. He allowed just one hit and struck out two in 2.0 scoreless innings.
  • Brett Wichrowski walked two and struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
