Bryant opens homestand with 15-5 win over Holy Cross

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Five different players collected multiple hits as the Bryant University baseball team opened a nine-game homestand with a 15-5 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon at Conaty Park.

Jackson Phinney finished with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored, Matt Woods drove in five and Matt Smith and James Myler each hit their first-career home runs. Smith finished a pair of hits, Stan DeMartinis III had two hits and three RBI and Alex Lane had three hits and scored three runs.

John MacDonald earned the win on Tuesday, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings in his second start of the year. He allowed three hits and didn't walk a batter. Jack Halbruner added 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Key Moment

  • Bryant scored eight times in the second inning to jump out in front. The big blow of the inning was a three-run home run from Woods.                             

How it Happened

  • After a scoreless first, Bryant erupted for eight runs in the second inning. Bryant loaded the bases and Phinney brought home the first run with a single to center. DeMartinis followed with a two-run double down the left field line. Two batters later, Woods launched the first pitch he saw over the right center wall for a three-run home run. Tuccillo added an RBI double and Phinney walked with the bases loaded to make it 8-0.
  • Matt Smith extended Bryant's lead with a long home run to right field in the third. It was his first-career home run.
  • The Black and Gold tacked on four runs in the fourth. Phinney brought home the first run of the inning with a ground ball up the middle that hit the second base bag and caromed into center. DeMartinis brought in a run with a single to left and Woods capped the inning with a two-run double that bounced off the first base bag and into shallow right field.
  • Holy Cross got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning.   
  • Myler then collected his first-career hit and first-career home run with one swing in the sixth.
  • The Crusaders added two more runs in the seventh.
  • Lane closed the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.

  • Bryant and Holy Cross were playing for the first time since 2009. Bryant now owns a 2-1 lead in the all-time series.
