Six-run first dooms Bryant on Friday

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – LIU scored six times in the first inning and held on for an 11-5 victory over the Bryant University baseball team on a rainy Friday in Brookville.

Friday's series opener was pushed up to a 10:30 a.m. first pitch and was played in a soft rain all game long. The loss snaps an eight-game conference winning streak for the Bulldogs.

LIU took advantage of two Bryant errors in the first inning, plating six runs. Collin Lowe would rebound to throw 6.0 innings for the Black and Gold. He allowed eight runs (one earned) on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Matt Woods picked up a pair of hits, drove in a run and scored a run. Shane Kelly and Randy Carlo both homered.

  • With three runs already across in the first, Chris Hund hit a three-run home run to make it a 6-0 LIU lead.                                       

How it Happened

  • With the bases loaded, a soft chopper up the middle was bobbled by Bryant's middle infielders. The two then collided and a second run scored after the ball popped free. After an RBI single to right made it 3-0, Hund hit a three-run home run to left to make it 6-0.
  • The Bulldogs got single runs back in the fourth and fifth. Woods scored on an infield error in the fourth and drove home Cole Wojtkowski with a two-out RBI single in the fifth.
  • LIU tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth, one on a sac fly and a second on a throwing error.
  • The Sharks made it 11-2 with a three-run eighth.
  • Bryant closed the scoring with a pair of home runs in the ninth. Kelly hit a pinch-hit two-run home run, while Carlo hit a solo shot.
