Bulldogs fall to No. 14 Virginia Tech, 4-1, on Saturday

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Bryant University baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series with No. 14 Virginia Tech, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at English Field.

Bryant and Virginia Tech have now split the first two games of the weekend set. The rubber match is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

On Saturday, the Hokies scored twice in the third and fourth innings and then held on to defeat the Bulldogs. Ken Turner started for Bryant and allowed four runs on four hits over 3.2 innings. The relief of Austin Wainer (3.2 IP, 3H, 0R, 4K) and Matthew Stansky (0.2 IP, 1K) held the Hokies off the board the rest of the way.

Jake Gustin drove in the lone run of the game for the Bulldogs, while John Hosmer picked up a pair of singles.

How it Happened

  • Bryant and Virginia Tech were scoreless through two and a half innings before Gehrig Ebel and Eddie Eisert hit back-to-back home runs in the second.
  • The Hokies made it 4-0 with two more in the fourth. Martin brought home the first run with an RBI single and a fielder's choice made it 4-0.
  • Wainer and Stansky, however, limited the Hokies to just three hits over the final 4.1 innings.
  • Bryant was able to push across a run in the sixth as Caden Dulin reached on an error and came around to score on a two-out single from Gustin.

  • Gustin drove in his second run of the series and now has four hits in the first two games.
