Bulldogs drop game two at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team had its six-game winning streak come to an end in an 11-3 loss to Brown in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Murray Stadium.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 7-8 on the year. Bryant won the series against the Bears with 10-1 and 9-6 victories in the first two games. The Bulldogs and Bears will play again on Wednesday in Providence.

Jake Gustin posted a pair of hits and scored twice, while Gavin Noriega had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs. Mark Scamardella made his collegiate debut in relief, tossing a scoreless inning.

  • Jared Johnson's third-inning grand slam capped an eight-run third inning for the Bears.

How it Happened

  • Bryant opened the scoring with single runs in the first and the third. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out in the first and Carmine Petosa plated Gustin with a single. The Bears escaped further damage with a double play.
  • In the third, Gustin doubled down the right field line and came around to score on a Noriega single.
  • Brown responded in a big way in the third, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring eight times. Two walks opened the inning and a triple plated both. Two more hits made it 4-2 before Johnson hit a 2-0 pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam.
  • The Bears would tack on single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth. 
  • Bryant plated its final run in seventh as Noriega plated Zac Zyons.

  • Wainer got his first start of the year and allowed four runs on two hits over 2.0 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
  • Liam LeVangie followed with an inning of relief and Logan Frasier delivered 2.2 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on five hits.
  • Scamardella tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, while Ryan Bradley recorded one out. Toby Scheidt tossed the 8th inning.

  • Scamardella was injured each of the last two seasons and made his collegiate debut on Saturday. He struck out the first batter he faced.
