Bryant rallies back to down Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Bryant University baseball team rallied from 4-0 down to earn a 6-4 victory in game one of Saturday's America East doubleheader against Binghamton University.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 12-10 overall and 4-1 in the league. Bryant and Binghamton will play the final game of there series on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 4-0 after two innings, Bryant rallied to victory by scoring in each of its next four plate appearances. The Bulldogs scored twice in the third, once in fourth, once in the fifth to tie it and twice in the sixth to take the lead.

Jake Gustin (2-4, 2RBI), Derek Smith (2-4, HR), Caden Dulin (2-3, 2B, HR, 2R) and Lewis Barnum (2-3, 2 2B, RBI, R) all finished with two hits. Smith tied the game in the fifth with his third home run of the year, while Dulin scored the eventual winning run in the sixth.

Tyler Tornberg, Logan Frasier and Matthew Stansky combined to throw 3.0 innings of scoreless relief of starter Brett Wichrowski. Tornberg earned his first collegiate win, while Stansky earned his first save since February 21, 2020.

  • Dulin led off the sixth with a double into right center and came around to score the eventual winning run.

How it Happened

  • Binghamton broke through first in game one, scoring four times in the second inning. A two-run home run from Nick Roselli opened the scoring and the Bearcats added a pair of RBI singles to make it 4-0.
  • Bryant started to chip away in the top of the third, plating two runs. Dulin opened the inning with a long solo home run to left center. Barnum then stroked one to left that went in and out of the glove of the left fielder who was racing onto the warning track. Gustin followed with a single right back up the middle to make it 4-2.
  • Barnum was in the mix again in the fourth as he ripped a double down the third base line to score a run and bring Bryant within one.
  • In the fifth, Smith swatted an elevated 2-2 pitch over the wall in right center, tying the game at 4-4.
  • Binghamton nearly took the lead in the fifth, putting two runners on against reliever Tyler Tornberg. Brian Schaub got Bryant out of the jam, making a sliding grab along the right field line.
  • Bryant took its first lead of the weekend in the sixth, plating two runs. Dulin led off the inning with a line drive into the right center gap. Phinney followed with a hard ground ball to third that got through the third baseman and into left, scoring Dulin. Gustin brought in the second run as he laced an 0-2 pitch into center for an RBI single to make it 6-4.
  • The Bearcats looked to rally again in the sixth, putting the first two batters of the inning on against reliever Logan Frasier. Frasier recovered to strike out the next batter before Tommy Reifler rifled one to first. Carmine Petosa snared the liner and threw to second to double off the runner, ending the inning.
  • Stansky came on in the seventh and recorded the final three outs, getting a ground ball to second to end it.
