Bulldogs fall to UMass Lowell, 12-8

LOWELL, Mass. – The Bryant University baseball team fell to UMass Lowell, 12-8, on Friday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 13-12 overall and 4-3 in the America East.

Derek Smith finished with three hits, including a two-run home run, to pace the offense. John Hosmer added a double and a two-run home run.

How it Happened

  • UML grabbed the lead in the first on an RBI single from Fritz Genther.
  • Bryant took the lead in the second inning. Noriega walked and Hosmer followed with an opposite field home run to right center to make it 2-1.
  • UML answered with a sac fly in the bottom of the inning, tying the game.
  • The River Hawks broke the tie with five runs in the fourth. A walk and a bunt single put the first two runners on. A one-out walk loaded the bases and Gerry Siracusa greeted reliever Austin Wainer with a three-run double into the right field corner. UML then reloaded the bases with two outs and plated two more with a single to left.  
  • UML added to its lead with four more runs in the sixth, giving the River Hawks an 11-2 lead.
  • Bryant would battle back, answering with four runs of its own in the top of the seventh. Hosmer and Jackson Phinney hit back-to-back doubles and came around to score on wild pitches. Smith then launched a two-run home run to left to make it 11-6.
  • In the ninth, Bryant would rally again. Smith drove in Jake Gustin with an RBI single to make it 12-7. Bryant would then load the bases with one out and score a final run on a ground out to first.

  • Chase Jeter allowed five runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out three in 3.1 innings.
  • Austin Wainer allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits over 2.2 innings. He struck out five.
