Big inning dooms Bulldogs in loss to UML

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell used a nine-run sixth inning to earn an 14-5 victory over the Bryant University baseball team on Saturday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 13-13 overall and 4-4 in America East play. The River Hawks have won the first two games of the weekend series.

Derek Smith picked up three hits, including two doubles, to pace the offense. Brett Wichrowski struck out six over a season-high 5.1 innings.

How it Happened

  • Bryant opened the game with three-straight singles to load the bases. Gavin Noriega then drove in the first run with a sac fly to left. A wild pitch then brought home a second run to make it 2-0.
  • The River Hawks responded with an RBI single in the first.
  • Bryant pushed its lead to 3-1 in the third. Derek Smith doubled down the left field line and came around to score on a ground out from Carmine Petosa.
  • UML answered again, taking advantage of a Bryant error to load the bases. A hit by pitch brought home a run before Gustin made a great defensive play at second to end the inning.
  • The River Hawks took the lead for good with a nine-run sixth inning. T. Brown gave UML the lead with a two-run single and a hit batter brought in a third run. A two-run single from Siracusa pushed the lead to 7-3. The River Hawks would add four more runs to make it 11-3.
  • Petosa would drive in two with a double in the top of the seventh to make it 11-5.
  • UML closed the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
