Two of New England's premier programs meet Tuesday in Storrs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant baseball team wraps up its five-game road trip on Tuesday as it makes the short trip over to Storrs to the face the University of Connecticut. First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m.

Tuesday's matchup features the two winningest programs in the Northeast since the 2009 season (Bryant's first year DI). The Huskies have won 552 games, while the Bulldogs have won 499.

Probable Starting Pitchers 

Tuesday - Bryant - Toby Scheidt vs UConn Ben Schild

  • Scheidt makes his second-straight midweek start for the Bulldogs. He tossed 3.0 scoreless innings last week vs Brown to earn the victory. 
  • Schild is 2-0 with a 5.09 ERA on the year. His best outing of the year came at UC Irvine where he allowed just one hit and struck out nine over 6.0 scoreless.

Bryant vs. UConn

  • Bryant is 4-11-1 all-time against UConn. The Bulldogs are in search of their first win vs the Huskies since the 2017 season. 
  • Last year, the game was tied 2-2 after 3 1/2 innings before the Huskies scored multiple runs in three-straight at-bats to pull away for an 11-3 win. 

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant enters the week 19-10 overall following a perfect 4-0 week. Bryant defeated Brown last Tuesday and then swept UAlbany over thew weekend. The Bulldogs are 18-3 since starting the year 1-7.
  • The Black and Gold have won eight straight games, tied for the fourth-longest current streak in the nation. 
  • The Bulldogs are 8-3 in one-run games this season. Bryant had a string of six-straight one-run games snapped in the series finale vs UMBC.
  • Bryant went 14-6 in March, tying the 2019 and 2013 teams for the second-most March wins in DI program history.  
  • The Bulldogs lead the America East with a 5.34 team ERA and have struck out 226 batters. Last week, Bryant's pitching staff allowed just 17 hits in 33.0 innings (.156 opponent average).
  • Carmine Petosa has reached safely in all 29 games this season and his on-base streak sits at 32 dating back to last year. The streak is the longest by a Bulldog since Jake Gustin reached safely in 33-straight spanning the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Petosa drove in 11 runs last week, plating five vs Brown in the midweek and six thanks to a pair of three-run home runs in the middle game of the series at UAlbany. 
  • Brandyn Durand has reached safely in 13 straight games and is hitting .260 with five doubles, five home runs and nine stolen bases.
  • Gavin Noriega leads the team in home runs (10), RBI (28), runs scored (32) and OBP (.482). He homered twice in the series finale vs UAlbany and went 7-for-14 with five walks in four games last week. 
  • Daniel Baruch is tied with Petosa with 23 RBI and owns a .571 slugging percentage. Eight of Baruch's last nine hits have gone for extra bases.

Scouting the Huskies

  • UConn enters the week at 12-16 overall following a Big East series victory over Xavier. The Huskies dropped the opener before claiming the final two games.
  • The Huskies are hitting .245 as a team and own a 4.99 team ERA. UConn has stolen 38 bases and owns a .973 fielding percentage.
  • Korey Morton is hitting .298 with 10 XBH, 18 RBI and eight stolen bases.
