BULLDOGS TAKE THEIR FIRST BITE OUT OF NATIONALS

ORLANDO, F.L. -- After an exciting season, the Bryant Bulldogs competed in the National Tournament at USTA’s National Campus for the first time!  On Friday, March 29th the Bulldogs flew down to Florida to take on some fierce competition. Bryant was the smallest school to compete in the tournament by 1,500 students, facing schools with up to 45,000 undergraduates.  The Bulldogs played three matches on Friday which were pool play to determine which bracket they would compete in. On Saturday, they played two matches within the bracket they were placed into. The last match of the tournament was on Sunday morning where the Bulldogs competed for third place in the Titanium bracket.

Friday, March 29th

MATCH ONE: Bryant vs. UPITT 6-30

  • Women’s Doubles: Jennifer Forte and Caitlin McCosh 1-6

  • Men’s Doubles: Nick Lecours & Weston Young 1-6

  • Women’s Singles: Lauren Wray 2-6

  • Men’s Singles: Wes Young 0-6

  • Mixed: Cam Germaine and Jennifer Forte 1-6

MATCH TWO: Bryant vs. Portland State 13-30

  • Women’s Doubles: Lauren Wray and Caitlin McCosh 3-6

  • Men’s Doubles: Cam Geramine and Wes Young 3-6

  • Women’s Singles: Jennifer Forte 0-6

  • Men’s Singles: Cam Germaine 3-6

  • Mixed: Nick Lecours and Lauren Wray 3-6

MATCH THREE: Bryant vs. Wisconsin 23-26

  • Women’s Doubles: Jennifer Forte and Caitlin McCosh 2-6

  • Men’s Doubles: Nick Lecours and Wes Young 4-6

  • Women’s Singles: Lauren Wray 6-1

  • Men’s Singles: Cam Germaine 6-5 (tiebreak 5-3)

  • Mixed: Caitlin McCosh and Wes Young 7-5

MATCH ONE: Bryant vs. UPITT

  • In their opening match, Bryant took on the University of Pittsburgh.  UPITT was a tough competitor who ultimately finished fourth overall in the tournament.  It was a hard fought match and a shout out to Lauren Wray, normally a doubles player, who stepped out of her comfort zone to play women’s singles.

MATCH TWO: Bryant vs. Portland State

  • Bryant’s second matchup of the day was against another strong opponent, Portland State University. Each match put up a great fight, with Cam Germaine who had an impressive fight against a very talented singles player from Portland. Cam’s ability to mix up his shots frustrated his opponent at times and lead to a valiant effort overall.

MATCH THREE: Bryant vs. Wisconsin

  • The third match of the day, under the lights on center court, was Bryant’s best showing of the day. Both singles match pulled through tough battles with their respective opponents. In the end, it all came down to the mixed doubles team of Caitlin McCosh and Wes Young. They had to not only win their match but also force overtime to give Bryant a hope at its first win. After winning the set, they were unable to pull out the overtime win but fought extremely hard. Young’s serve, combined with McCosh’s net play made them a difficult team to beat for the rest of the tournament.

Saturday, March 30th

Final Score:

MATCH ONE: Bryant vs. Winona 18-24

  • Women’s Doubles: Lauren Wray and Caitlin McCosh 6-0

  • Men’s Doubles: Nick Lecours and Wes Young 3-6

  • Women’s Singles: Lauren Wray 5-6

  • Men’s Singles: Cam Germaine (1-6)

  • Mixed: Jennifer Forte and Cam Germaine (3-6)

MATCH TWO: Bryant vs. UNC Charlotte 28-19

  • Women’s Doubles: Lauren Wray and Caitlin McCosh 6-2

  • Men’s Doubles: Cam Germaine and Wes Young 6-5

  • Women’s Singles: Jennifer Forte 6-3

  • Men’s Singles: Nick Lecours 1-6

  • Mixed: Caitlin McCosh and Wes Young 6-3

MATCH ONE: Bryant vs. Winona

  • On day two of the tournament, Bryant was playing in the Titanium bracket. Their first match was against Winona State, from Minnesota. The highlight of this match was Lauren Wray and Caitlin McCosh’s comprehensive 6-0 win in the women’s doubles. With the combination of smart serves and powerful net play, they were able to.

MATCH TWO: Bryant vs. UNC Charlotte 28-19

  • Bryant’s next match was against UNC-Charlotte where Bryant dominated its competition-winning almost every match that day. Each member contributed well to the success of the team, putting up points to get the Bulldogs past their opponents which allowed them to move on to play for third place in their bracket on Sunday.

Sunday, March 31st

Final Scores:

MATCH THREE: Bryant vs. Illinois 26-18

  • Women’s Doubles: Lauren Wray and Caitlin McCosh 6-2

  • Men’s Doubles: Cam Germaine and Wes Young 5-6

  • Women’s Singles: Jennifer Forte 6-1

  • Men’s Singles: Cam Germaine 3-6

  • Mixed: Caitlin McCosh and Wes Young 6-3

Game Info:

MATCH THREE: Bryant vs. Illinois

  • With third place on the line, Bryant took on Illinois in its final match of the tournament. Jen Forte’s singles win of 6-1 pushed the team over the finish line. Her excellent groundstrokes and smart playing kept her opponent off balance. Her win pushed the rest of the team to fight through their match. Bryant took home 3rd in their bracket after this win of 26-18 over Illinois.
