Bulldogs Win Season Opener 3-2 over Assumption

WORCESTER, MA.
– The Bryant field hockey team kicked off its 2007 season, rebounding from a 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals and held on for the 3-2 victory over Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference game Wednesday night.

Trailing 1-0, the Bulldogs evened the tally at 19:16 as senior Shana Libman (Attleboro, MA) scored Bryant’s first goal of 2007, taking a pass from sophomore Caitlan Johnson (Walpole, MA) and firing it past Greyhound goaltender Kaitlin Burke.

Five minutes into the second half, junior Jenna DeMello (Mohegan Lake, NY) posted her first career goal as she tipped in a shot from senior Courtney O’Brien (Tewksbury, MA) to give the Bulldogs the lead.

Just five minutes later, senior Caroline Carr (Wrentham, MA) tipped in another shot from O’Brien, quickly making the score 3-1.

Bryant would hang on there despite Michelle Pasquale scoring her second of the game off a penalty corner to cut the lead to 3-2 in the 57th minute.

Sophomore Kundayi Mawema (Hare, Zimbabwe) was solid in net making six saves. Burke stopped 10 for Assumption.

O’Brien led the way offensively with two assists and six shots (four on net), while Libman added four shots (three on target).

The Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) will head to Pennsylvania for the Labor Day weekend and will take on #1 Bloomsburg Saturday at noon and #8 Mansfield Sunday at noon. The home opener is September 10 against Merrimack at 7 p.m.
