BULLDOGS DROP HEARTBREAKER TO SACRED HEART IN FINAL ROAD GAME OF SEASON

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Despite outshooting Sacred Heart, 14-11, the Bryant University field hockey team was edged by the Pioneers, 2-1, in its final road contest of the 2009 season.

Junior Julie Kuchyt (Hatfield, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game for the Bulldogs (4-10, 1-4 Northeast Conference) in the 32nd minute, erasing an earlier tally by Chelsea Carlson and evening the score at 1-1.

But after halftime, Stephanie Fazio notched the eventual game winner with an unassisted goal at the 46:35 mark to seal the 2-1 victory for Sacred Heart (2-13, 1-3).

Kuchyt recorded three shots to lead the Bulldogs, while senior goalkeeper Kundayi Mawema (Harare, Zimbabwe) made five stops in the contest. Pioneers goalie Kim Stow made seven saves between the posts.

Bryant put eight shots on goal to Sacred Heart's seven while senior Caitlan Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) recorded the assist on Kuchyt's goal.

The Bulldogs return home to close out their 2009 campaign, playing four games in nine days at the Bryant Turf Complex. The Black and Gold will open the four-game home stint with a 7 p.m. matchup against Siena on Friday, Oct. 23.
