Field Hockey travels to Holy Cross

HOLY CROSS ATHLETICS LIVE BLOG

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team wraps up its non-conference slate on Tuesday (Oct. 4), traveling to Worcester, Mass. to battle Holy Cross under the lights at Hart Turf Field.  Game time is slated for 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs (5-5) are fresh off a sound victory over La Salle on Oct. 1, with freshman Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) leading the way with two markers in that game.  Bryant also saw goals from sophomore Mallory Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) and senior Courtney Landi (Kingston, N.Y.) in that victory.  The Crusaders (1-9) most recently were blanked, 7-0, by Bucknell over the weekend in their Patriot League opener.

Both teams have met just twice in program history dating back to the 2009 season. The Black and Gold have emerged victorious on both occasions, including a 1-0 win on Sept. 30, 2009 and a 2-1 overtime victory last season.  In last year's match, senior tri-captain Katherine Andrusin (North Andover, Mass.) scored an unassisted tally at 85:41, propelling the Bulldogs to the win.

Bryant and Holy Cross share three common opponents in Harvard, Georgetown and Dartmouth.  The Crusaders fell to all three teams, while Bryant picked up a 4-1 victory over the Hoyas while suffering defeats against the Crimson and Big Green.

Holy Cross has seen a balanced spread of offensive output, with six different players finding the back fo the cage through its first 10 contests while four players have garnered assists. The goaltending duties have been manned primarily by Kat Matchett, who has started nine games and logged 601:32.  The freshman boasts a 5.24 goals-against average to go with a .607 save percentage.

After today's affair, the Bulldogs will open NEC play on Friday, Oct. 7, squaring off against Monmouth University at the Bryant Track and Turf Complex.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
