Bulldogs drop OT heartbreaker Friday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – In its sixth overtime contest out of their last eight, the Bryant University field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker to Quinnipiac, 1-0, Friday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.

Twelve minutes into the first overtime period, Quinnipiac earned its first penalty corner in extra time, setting up Haley Swartz who fired a shot toward the cage, deflected by Amanda Danziger past Bryant keeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) for the lone score of the match.

Junior Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and senior Olivia Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass) combined for seven of Bryant nine shots. Megan Hancock stopped 10 Bobcat chances, while QU keeper megan Conaboy finished with a trio of saves.

Senior MaKayla Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) made a pair of defensive saves, while junior Kelsey Hiltebeitel (Warminster, Pa.), sophomore Mikayla Fitzmaurice (Skowhegan, Maine) and freshmen Samantha Yoder (Mount Joy, Pa.) each added one of their own.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs already qualified for the MAAC Tournament which kicks off on Friday, Nov. 9 in Lawrenceville, N.J. The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season on Sunday when they welcome Sacred Heart to Smithfield for Senior Day. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
