Borovskis, Walton score first-career markers in 3-1 Bulldog win

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Behind the first-career goals from sophomore forward Elena Borovskis (Pequannock, N.J.), the Bryant University field hockey team took down Holy Cross, 3-1, Thursday evening in Worcester, Mass.

Battling the injury the bug, the Bulldogs (3-7) scored the final three tallies of the contest to snap a three-game skid, while the Crusaders (3-9) suffer their second-straight loss of the season.

After Maureen Connolly's fourth goal of the season 5:37 mark, the Black and Gold certainly took advantage of their scoring opportunities, adding two goals in the first half, before knocking in a third in the final frame en route to the 3-1 victory.

At the 15:00 minute mark, Bryant converted on its lone corner of the evening when junior Bronwyn Walton (North Vancouver, B.C.) received a pass from classmate Mikayla Fitzmaurice (Skowhegan, Maine) off a corner from Bethany Winkin (Winslow, Maine) to knot the score, 1-1.

Bryant eventually took their first lead of the night at the 19:58 mark when a strike from Victoria Danby (Lancaster, Mass.) from the left side of the circle found the stick of Borovskis for the sophomore's first marker as a Bulldog.

Borovskis added another for good measure at the 46:42 mark, putting back a loose ball just outside the net, securing Bryant's 3-1 victory.

Despite being outshot, 11-6, and earning only a single corner (14-1), the Bulldogs persevered behind the strong play of some unlikely sources. Bryant's last five goals have come from players who hadn't previously scored entering the contest (Winkin 2, Borovskis 2, Walton).

However, the wide array of offensive threats will only help the Black and Gold as they look ahead to the start of MAAC play just 10 days away. Bryant will play its last non-conference contest before opening league action on Wednesday when they visit New Haven, Conn., for a showdown with Yale.
