Bryant falls at Yale, 1-0, Wednesday night

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite outshooting its opponent, 16-9, the Bryant University field hockey team fell to Yale, 1-0, Wednesday night in New Haven, Conn.

The Black and Gold (3-8) mustered up a game-high 16 shots, including 10 in the first half, and earned eight corners compared to Yale's (2-8, 0-3 Ivy League) six, but it was the hosts who were able to find the back of net for the 1-0 decision.

The lone tally of the contest came just as the first half came to a close. Yale earned a penalty corner, its third on the frame, and converted when Megan Kirkham found Carol Middough for her third marker of the season and the eventual game-winner at the 35 minute mark.

Bryant certainly had its chances though, with Victoria Danby (Lancaster, Mass.), Abigail Armstrong (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Bethany Winkin (Winslow, Maine) combining for 12 shots (four on goal) on the night.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) made four stops between the pipes for the Black and Gold in her 11th start of the season, while Yale's Heather Schlesier made seven saves in just her second victory of the 2014 season.

Wednesday marks Bryant's fifth one-goal loss of the season and fourth overall defeat in the last five games. Looking ahead, the Black and Gold will open MAAC play on Sunday when they visit Sacred Heart for a 3 p.m. tilt in Fairfield, Conn.
