Danby ties contest before halftime but Catamounts find 4-2 win over Bulldogs, Sunday afternoon

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Victoria Danby (Lancaster, Mass.) of the Bryant University field hockey team scored her first goal of the season to tie the contest just before halftime, but Vermont's two-point performance in the second half proved to be too much, as the Catamounts won, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in Burlington.

Following a 2-1 deficit in the first period, senior captain Elena Borovskis (Pequannock, N.J.) recovered her own rebound off a breakaway shot, before crossing the ball to the left side of the Catamounts' (5-3) keeper, where Danby was there to sweep the Bulldogs' (0-8) game-tying score into the back of the cage in the 34th minute.

Danby finished the contest with a game-high three points, assisting Freya Ward (Haywards Heath, England) on her first career goal in the 10th minute. From the stroke spot, Danby cranked a shot and Ward was there for the deflection into the cage for the initial score in the game.

Vermont's Landon Warren answered back in the 14th minute, before Lauren Tucker found Rachael Picchi for the Catamount's go-ahead goal with just over 14 minutes to play in the opening half.

Danby cued up the Bulldogs' tying score before the intermission, but the second half was controlled by the Catamounts, as they scored back-to-back unanswered goals off penalty corners, securing their home victory. Olivia Hurd set up Tess O'Brien for the game-winning goal off a penalty corner opportunity, before Tucker earned her second assist of the game on the helper to Anne-Maria Farmer off a penalty corner.

Danby and sophomore Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) led the Bulldogs with three shots apiece, as Danby notched a team-high two attempts on goal. The Catamounts got off nine shots in the game, placing four on goal in which all four attempts resulted in goals. Sophomore Marissa Elizardo (New Wales, Pa.) did not have any saves in the contest. Vermont's keeper Lena Benwood knocked away six Bryant attempts in the 70 minutes of play.

The Black and Gold return home next Sunday, Sept. 25, to host Columbia at Brown's Goldberg Family Field at 12 p.m.
