Newbill selected for 2017 Young Women's National Championships

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University field hockey sophomore Victoria Newbill (Wilton, Maine) was named to the 2017 Young Women's National Championship Selection, joining the ranks of the country's most elite collegiate players who will vie for place on the U.S. U21 National Team following this year's tournament.

The Young Women's National Championship is a high-level, international structured competition which serves as a selection opportunity for the 2017-18 U.S. U-21 Women's National Team, U.S. Women's National Development Squad and the U.S. Women's National Team.

"We are extremely proud of Vicky," said interim head coach Carla Johl. "Her selection is a testament to the many hours of extra work she has put in and the commitment she has to refining her game."

Newbill is the first student-athlete to represent Bryant University in the national tournament. The forward is 1-of-100 collegiate athletes to be selected across the country to compete, including four players from two-time NCAA National Championship Runner-ups North Carolina. Newbill joins 32 players from the final 2016 NFHCA Top-10 Rankings and is only 1-of-2 players to represent the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference; the other being Nichole Tolli of Sacred Heart University.

"We are excited to be able to see her compete with and alongside some of the best players in the country," said Johl.

The sophomore finished the 2016 season with two goals off 11 shots, netting a game-tying goal in the Bulldogs' MAAC Semifinals appearance against No. 2 Fairfield. The forward's other goal came in Bryant's 6-0 win over LIU Brooklyn.

The New England native appeared in all 18 games, making 12 starts. Newbill helped the Bulldogs to a 4-2 conference record en route to their first trip back to the MAAC postseason in three years as the No. 3 seed. She was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team and the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, helping her team rank fourth in the country with a 3.57 team GPA.

This year's Young Women's National Championship tournament will be held at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. from June 12-16.
