Bryant's fight not enough against Drexel

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team fell to the Dragons of Drexel University in a hard fought battle, 3-2, late Friday afternoon.

"I really like the fight that we had but we still gave up too many easy goals. We fought for 70 minutes, and this is a team we struggled with last year but were able to compete with today." 

Key Moment

Within three minutes of the second half, Drexel's Megan Wiest was able to find the back of the net for the Dragons. This furthered Drexel's lead to two goals and was a deficit that the Bulldogs were unable to come back from. Bryant was able to score within in the same minute to try and catch the Dragons and cut their lead, but remained scoreless prior to their final goal.

• 4^' – Drexel 1, Bryant 0 – During Drexel's second penalty corner of the game, Megan Wiest shot the ball twice but one was saved by Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) and the other was blocked by the Bulldog defense. The rebound bounced right to Tess Horan's stick and she was able to put the ball away for the first goal of the game.
• 13' – Drexel 1, Bryant 1 – Off of a penalty corner, Leyna DiMarco (Glastonbury, Conn.) ripped a shot from the top of the circle. Drexel's goalie, Alexis Sokach saved the shot but Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) got the rebound and popped the ball into the cage to even the score.
• 28' – Drexel 2, Bryant 1 – Drexel withheld possession and Sydney Muntone passed the ball from outside the circle to Tess Bernheimer. Bernheimer tapped the ball passed Jaarsma to take the lead.
• 38' – Drexel 3, Bryant 1 – Drexel's Megan Wiest scored effortlessly by blasting a shot from within the circle past the Bulldog keeper to further their lead over the Bulldogs.
• 38' – Drexel 3, Bryant 2 – The Bulldogs refused to give up and scored only 30 seconds after Drexel's final goal. Off of a penalty corner, freshman Brittany Gouws (Capetown, South Africa) found DiMarco. DiMarco was able to take a powerful shot that Drexel's keeper was not able to stop. The Bulldogs' cut Drexel's lead in half but remained scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Stats/Notes

• Bryant outshot Drexel, 12-11, with DiMarco leading the Bulldogs with five shots. One of DiMarco's chances was successful making it her second goal of the season.
• Gouws tallied her first career assist, and the only Bulldog assist of the game, with her pass to DiMarco. The rookie now totals one point so far for the season.
• Jaarsma played her second consecutive game of 70 minutes in the cage for the Bulldogs, making four saves, which is the same amount of saves that Alexis Sokach made on the other end of the field for the Dragons. The freshman increased her saves to 28 so far in the season.
• The Bulldogs also led the Dragons in penalty corners, 9-5, and even had one after the horn sounded to end the game. The refs granted Bryant the corner but the Bulldogs were unsuccessful in their final attempt to even the score.
