Albany tops Bulldogs with back-to-back goals

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Bryant University field hockey team held their own by keeping No. 25 Albany scoreless for most of the game, but two back-to-back goals in the second half were the difference in the Bulldogs 2-0 loss on Friday.

Coach de Vries' Comments

"We were very concentrated and we knew our game plan. Knowing Albany, it wasn't a surprise that they came out hard, but we held our own and shoutout to the defensive unit. We had a few opportunities and hopefully we will be able to convert them into corners or shots on Sunday." 

Key Moment

In the 58^th minute of play, Albany made a long pass from outside of the circle to Katie MacCallum. She took a touch away from the Bulldog defense and fired a shot past Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands)  and into the right corner of the cage to give Albany the lead that they would not surrender.

Scoring Summaries

• 58' – Albany 1, Bryant 0 – The Great Danes found the stick of MacCallum off of a long pass from outside the crease. MacCallum took the 19^th Great Dane shot of the game and was successful in finding the back of the net to put the Danes up one.
• 59' – Albany 2, Bryant 0 – Viol Von der Muhlen took Albany's eighth and final penalty corner of the game. Von der Muhlen passed the ball to Cosima Rocktaeschel who was able to fire a shot past the Bulldogs. Albany's second goal occurred just one minute and 20 seconds after the first.

Stats/Notes

• The Great Danes outshot the Bulldogs, 23-2, with 16 of their shots on goal. Jaarsma was able to stop 12 of their chances while playing the entire 70 minutes in the cage for the Bulldogs.
• Freshman Eva Bazen (The Hague, Netherlands)  and senior Victoria Newbill (Wilton, Maine) were the only Bulldogs to put shots on frame. Both shots gave Albany's Melissa Nealon her only two saves of the day.
• The Bulldogs defended eight penalty corners but did not receive any on their offensive end. Penalty corners are crucial to the Bulldog offense as they have scored five out of their six goals this season off of penalty corners.
