He helped the Sycamores win 23 games and advance to the quarterfinals of the CBI. Prior to that, he had a successful two-year run as the head coach at Des Moines Area Community College where he led the team to the NJCAA Division II National Championship in 2021 and a third-place finish at the national tournament in 2022.

Putz first Division I coaching experience came on the staff at Omaha as the Director of Basketball Operations from 2016-18.  During that time Omaha tied their record for Division I wins in a season (18) and reached the championship game of the 2017 Summit League Tournament.  He then was on the staff at Highland Community College before coaching at Chicago State.  At both HCC and CSU, Putz was involved with coaching perimeter and post players as well as recruiting.
