BRYANT TAKE EIGHTH AT NEW ENGLAND GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS, THRESHER EARNS TOP-25 FINISH

Final Results

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University golf team finished one stroke better than its Day One score in Sunday’s final round and senior Jason Thresher (West Suffield, Conn.) earned a top-25 finish in the tournament as the Bulldogs wrapped up the 2010 New England Golf Championships with an eighth-place team finish at Triggs Memorial Golf Club in Providence, R.I.

The Bulldogs shot a 310 Sunday to finish eighth in the 12-team field, topping host Brown, Fairfield, Boston University and Providence College on the weekend.

Thresher’s second-round 75 moved him into the top-25 after being tied for 31st after Saturday action, and the senior would conclude the New England Championships tied for 23rd with a two-day score of 154.

But it was Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) who had arguably the most impressive day for the Black and Gold, as the sophomore improved upon his Day One score by a whopping 16 strokes to match Thresher’s team-best round of 75. He would finish 53rd with a total score of 166.

Rookie Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) replayed his 79 from Saturday action while senior Mike Pyne (Foxboro, Mass.) and junior Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, R.I.) recorded second-round scores of 82 and 81, respectively, as the trio each ended up with a weekend 158, knotting them all for 35th-place in the 60-golfer field.

The Bulldogs (621) finished seven strokes back from sixth-place finishers Central Connecticut and Holy Cross, while the University of Connecticut won the Championships with a team score of 586. UConn’s Adam Vaccari and Hartford’s Maki Kobayashi tied for the top spot among the 60 individual golfers with two-round scores of 144.

Bryant returns to action April 16-18 at the UMass Lowell Invitational.
