THRESHER, BULLDOGS FINISH FOURTH AS RAIN CANCELS FINAL ROUND OF NORTHEAST INVITATIONAL

Day One Results (Final)

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After inclement weather cancelled the second day of the 2010 Northeast Invitational at Green Valley Country Club, Bryant University golf senior Jason Thresher (West Suffield, Conn.) would use his first-round 75 to finish in a tie for fourth overall, leading the Bulldogs to a fourth-place team finish in the rain-shortened tournament.

Despite the fourth-place finish, the Bulldogs would fall just seven strokes back from eventual winner and host the University of Rhode Island in the 11-team field, shooting a 309 as a team in first-round action.

Senior Mike Pyne (Foxboro, Mass.) would finish knotted for 12th overall in the 58-golfer field, recording a round of 77 on Saturday, while junior Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) finished close behind with a score of 78 (T-19).

Classmate Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, R.I.) came in just a single stroke back from Sweitzer to take 26th overall while Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) posted an 83 in the first-day play and would end the shortened tournament in a tie for 40th.

The Rams’ Taylor Fontaine took the individual title with a first-round 72 and led URI to a top team finish (302) in the single-round invitational. Northeast Conference opponent Sacred Heart finished second (304) with Fordham wrapping up the top three (306).

Among those the Bulldogs finished ahead of were league members Central Connecticut and Long Island University, as well as instate foes Providence College and Johnson and Wales.

The Bulldogs close out 2010 golf action April 30 through May 2 at the NEC Championships in Orlando, Fla.
