THRESHER TAKES FOURTH AT NEC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS, SWEITZER JOINS TEAMMATE WITH TOP-10 FINISH

Final results to follow.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University senior golf standout Jason Thresher (West Suffield, Conn.) capped off a stellar career Sunday, finishing just five strokes over and just three behind the eventual winner to take fourth place overall at the 2010 Northeast Conference Golf Championships in ChampionsGate, Fla.

Thresher carded his best round of the tournament in Sunday action with a 73 to finish with a five-over 221 on the weekend. First-year golfer Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) joined his teammate in the top-10, finishing in a three-player knot for seventh place. Sweitzer, a junior transfer, also recorded his best day in Sunday’s final round, carding a 74 for a 225 on the tournament.

Junior Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, R.I.) fell four spots after carding a 78 in the third round to finish a still-impressive tied for 12th overall, while the same score from Greg Najarian (Rumford, R.I.) vaulted the rookie eight slots up to 42nd in the season’s final competition. Senior Mike Pyne (Foxboro, Mass.) carded an 85 to finish in 45th with a weekend score of 252.

The Bulldogs competed at the championships only as individuals and Bryant was not included in the team scoring, as it is still reclassifying and not eligible for NCAA tournament play. Unofficially, the Bryant had its best round Sunday with a 303 and would have finished in fourth place among the 10-team field with a final score of 916.

Fairleigh Dickinson’s Robert Cerabone took the overall individual title after a third-round 72 left him with a three-day total of 218, while Saint Francis (PA) took the team title with a score of 910, just one stroke ahead of second-place finisher Sacred Heart.
