Golf tied for ninth at New Englands (Day 1)

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University golf team is tied for ninth place after the first round of play at the 76th Annual New England Championships at The Captain's Course in Brewster, Mass.

The Bulldogs shot a combined 313 on the first day and have three golfers tied for 39th place in the individual standings. Senior Michael Pyne (Foxboro, Mass.) and juniors Brent Besch (Wallingford, Conn.) and Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) each opened with a 78 round to sit at six over par (+6).

Rhode Island sits in first place as a team with a score of 297 to lead the 37-team, 182-golfer field while Central Connecticut and Connecticut are tied for second at 300. URI's John Kelly and Connecticut's Brian Hughes are tied for first individually at one-under par with rounds of 71.

Senior Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, R.I.) shot a 79 to place tied for 54th while senior Alex Daley (Hudson, Mass.) carded an 84 to round out the scoring.  

Play will finish Tuesday morning as the teams complete the two-day, two-round tournament.
