SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Led by a pair of top-25 finishes from junior Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Michael Pyne (Foxboro, Mass.), the Bryant University golf team placed fifth as a team at the 76th Annual New England Championships on Tuesday at The Captain's Course in Brewster, Mass.

Bryant senior Alex Daley (Hudson, Mass.) was honored by the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association with the 2010 Guy Tedesco (player) Award at a pre-tournament reception on Sunday. The annual Tedesco award is presented to a New England collegiate golfer from Divisions I, II or III who not only embodies the spirit of the game but also excels in the classroom and demonstrates leadership and sportsmanship.

The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes 44 member colleges and universities in New England and is considered to be the oldest and largest college golf tournament. It is unique in that Divisions I, II and III compete together.

After shooting a 313 on the first day, the Bulldogs stormed back to score a 298 in the second round for a two-day, two-round total of 611, finishing three strokes ahead of Husson University in the 37-team, 182-golfer field. Rhode Island held on to its first round standing to claim the team championship while Connecticut's Adam Vaccari shot a 68 in the final round to take home individual honors.

Certuse and Pyne tied for 24th overall at the contest after both Bulldog golfers shot a 75 on the second day to finish at 153, good enough for nine over (+9).

Senior Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, R.I.) tied for 33rd place, shooting a 75 in the final round after an opening score of 79 for a total of 154 strokes.

Daley and junior Brent Besch (Wallingford, Conn.) rounded out the Bryant lineup, tying for 50th place with scores of 157.

The NEIGA event marks the final tournament for the Bryant University golf team this fall.
